At DPS Art Studio we set time aside to practice our art.
Here are several of the areas of practice where you can focus during your art sessions

Drawing & Illustration

Drawing and illustration is a visual art form that involves creating images using various mediums such as pencils, pens, markers, and digital software.

It is a creative process that allows artists to express their ideas, emotions, and stories through the use of lines, shapes, colors, and textures.

Drawing and illustration can be used in various forms such as editorial cartoons, children’s books, advertising, graphic design, and fine art. It requires skill, patience, and imagination to bring ideas to life on paper or screen.

Watercolor Painting

Watercolor painting is a versatile and fluid medium that uses water-soluble pigments to create stunning works of art. Artists can create soft washes of color or build up layers of vibrant hues to capture the beauty of landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and more.

The transparent nature of watercolors allows for subtle blending and layering of colors, resulting in a dreamy and ethereal quality to the finished pieces.

With its delicate and expressive qualities, watercolor painting is a favorite medium for artists looking to capture the beauty of the world around them.

Acrylic Painting

Acrylic painting is a versatile and vibrant medium where pigments are mixed with a water-based acrylic polymer to create vivid, fast-drying colors.

Artists can use a variety of techniques such as layering, blending, and dry brushing to achieve a wide range of textures and effects.

Acrylic paint can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including canvas, paper, wood, and fabric, making it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced artists. It provides a durable and long-lasting finish, with the ability to be easily cleaned up with water.

Linocut Printmaking

A linocut is a printmaking technique where a design is carved into a block of linoleum, inked, and pressed onto paper to create a print.

The process involves the following steps:

  1. Design: The artist sketches the desired design on the linoleum block.
  2. Carving: Using gouges or knives, the artist carves away the areas of the block that are not part of the design.
  3. Inking: Ink is applied to the raised surface of the block, covering only the design.
  4. Printing: The block is placed face down on paper and pressure is applied, transferring the ink onto the paper.
  5. Repeat: The process can be repeated to create multiple prints.

Linocuts are effective because they allow artists to create bold, graphic designs with a range of textures. The techniques used in linocut printing can give the prints a unique and expressive look.

Etching Printmaking

Etching is a printmaking technique that dates back centuries and continues to captivate artists and art enthusiasts with its intricate and expressive qualities. In etching, an image is created on an acrylic plate by drawing and carving lines and textures that will later be inked and transferred onto paper through a printing press.

Using a sharp tool called an etching needle, the artist then draws their design directly onto the acrylic plate. Once the etching process is complete, the plate is inked and wiped, leaving ink only in the etched lines and textures.

The plate is then placed on a printing press along with dampened paper, and pressure is applied to transfer the ink onto the paper, revealing the final printed image.

Etching printmaking offers artists a unique and versatile medium for creating detailed and expressive prints with a wide range of textures and effects. Its intricate nature and the element of unpredictability in the process adds the element of surprise and experimentation to the artistic journey.

Handbuilding Pottery

Pottery is the art of creating ceramic objects by molding clay and other materials into various shapes, then firing them at high temperatures to harden and preserve the form.

It is a centuries-old craft that combines both artistic expression and functional utility, with pieces ranging from delicate decorative items to sturdy tableware. Pottery can be handcrafted or produced using molds and machines, and may be glazed or left unglazed depending on the desired aesthetic and functionality.

Overall, pottery is a versatile and enduring art form that continues to be appreciated and practiced around the world.
